Nature
It is a thick root. It is of two types: male, which has a long root, and female, which has a medium-sized root or a root-like structure. The long root is about as thick as a finger and approximately 8–9 inches long. It is reddish in color and bitter in taste.

Uses
Due to its dissolving properties and its ability to remove damaged tissue, it is used with Irsa to remove the flesh from old and damaged wounds and to promote the formation of new tissue. Some ointments are also prepared from it.
Due to its cleansing properties, it is used as a poultice to remove facial blemishes and brighten the complexion.
Because of its expectorant properties, it is used as a poultice for cough and asthma.
Due to its laxative properties, it is used to stimulate menstruation. It is used internally and externally to assist in the expulsion of the fetus and to promote uterine contractions.
Because of its dissolving properties, it is believed to relax the nerves. It is used for nausea, vomiting, tetanus, and nervous and phlegmatic conditions such as paralysis. It is also used as a poultice for tremors.
Since it is considered effective against worms, it is administered to help eliminate stomach worms. It kills the worms and helps expel them through its laxative action.
When mixed with oil, it is applied to the body. Massaging the head and body with it is traditionally believed to kill lice in the hair and on the body.
