Introduction
Onosma echioides, commonly known as Ratanjot, is a rough, hairy herb about one foot high. It grows in the Himalayan regions from Kashmir to Kumaon at elevations of 5,000–8,000 feet. Its reddish root is light, flaky, and widely used in medicine as well as for natural coloring.
Root
The root is red in color, lightweight, and flaky. It has the unique property of dissolving in both water and oil, making it useful for coloring:

- Traditionally used in formulations for expulsion of retained placenta and menstrual obstruction

- Occasionally used for jaundice, spleen, kidney, and bladder issues
- Added to pickles and foods for natural coloring
- However, internal use is less common, as more effective medicines are available

Introduction
Onosma echioides (Ratanjot) is a herb that grows in rocky and dry regions, often found in areas where plants like cress or thyme grow. Its general appearance resembles Kalfa Khurd, and its branches and parts are often reddish in color. In some regions of Punjab, it is also known as the “butter plant.”
A notable feature is that when uprooted and kept in shade, it can remain fresh for a long time.
