Introduction
Funduq, commonly known as hazelnut, is a nutritious and medicinal nut valued in traditional systems like Unani medicine. It is appreciated for its brain-strengthening, nourishing, and expectorant properties and is often used similarly to almonds in diet and remedies.
Botanical Description
Funduq is obtained from a mountainous tree that naturally grows in cold regions. Although it was once found only in limited quantities, it is now increasingly cultivated in suitable climates.
The fruit (nut) is
- Triangular or slightly rounded in shape
- Covered with a light brown (almond-colored) outer shell
- When soaked, the kernel becomes whitish and softer
- Has a pleasant, sweet taste, similar to almond kernel
Temperament (Unani Perspective)
- Warm in the second degree
- Moderately moist (first degree) (inferred from its nutritive nature)
