Fomitopsis officinalis

Introduction

Physicians differ regarding the exact nature and identity of Fomitopsis officinalis. It is traditionally described as a type of fungus that grows on pine trees or other trees belonging to the pine family.

It is available in the market as white, light, fibrous, and spongy pieces. Its taste is initially sweet but later becomes sour and bitter. It is traditionally used after being grated.

Temperament

Hot, first degree; dry, second degree.

Actions and Properties

Traditionally, Fomitopsis officinalis is described as having the following properties:

  • Dissolves and purges thickened humors
  • Softens humors
  • Removes obstructions
  • Astringent
  • Hemostatic (traditionally used to help stop bleeding)
  • Emetic
  • Promotes urination
  • Promotes menstruation

Traditional Uses

Because of its traditionally described purging and dissolving properties, Fomitopsis officinalis is used in traditional medicine for joint pain, sciatica, gout, epilepsy, asthma, cough, and obstructive jaundice.

Because of its astringent and hemostatic properties, it is traditionally considered beneficial for hemoptysis (coughing up blood) and ascites (abnormal accumulation of fluid in the abdomen).

As it is traditionally believed to promote urination and menstruation, it may be combined with other medicines in traditional formulations intended to encourage menstrual flow.

Because of its traditionally described ability to soften humors and remove obstructions, it is used for splenic inflammation, particularly when administered with Sakanjabin (oxymel). Traditional sources also describe its use for helping to alleviate certain fevers.

Specific Benefit

Traditionally regarded as beneficial for purging phlegm and black bile (Sauda).

Traditional Dosage

0.97–1.94 g.

This is a conversion of the traditional dosage and should not be interpreted as an established modern therapeutic dose.
