Introduction
The plant is known as Aspidium filix-mas. Its rhizomes (knotted roots) are harvested in the autumn. The upper leaves and any decayed or rotten parts are removed. Notably, rhizomes that are more than one year old should not be used. These rhizomes range from approximately 2.5 to 16 inches (6.4–40.6 cm) in length and are about 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter. They are covered on all sides by small, pointed, blackish, thick leaf stalks. These stalks are so closely packed that the surface of the rhizome resembles a fish’s back.Internally, the rhizome is yellowish-white, while the exterior is brown. It has a taste that is initially sweet but subsequently becomes bitter and nauseating. The plant generally grows in the Himalayas, North America, and Europe.
