Introduction
Both pitch and tar are obtained from the same tree. The difference is that the substance obtained naturally or by cracking the trunk of a tree is called pitch, while the substance obtained through a special process or industrial method is called tar.
Nature
Wood tar is a dark brown liquid with a distinctive and pleasant aroma. It is obtained through a special process from pine wood. Its specific gravity is approximately 12 to 15. When mixed with water and stirred, its color becomes light brown, and it has an acidic nature.
It is soluble in one part of alcohol, including 90% alcohol, and is also soluble in some olive oil and turpentine oil.
Chemical Composition
Its chemical composition is very complex. It contains volatile substances such as:
- Acrylamide
- Phenol
- Guaiacol
- Pyrocatechol
- Pterocatechin
- Catelevin
- Xylol
- Acetone
- Resin

Many types of ointments are made from it and are used for wounds and psoriasis. Along with other medicines, it is also used as a poultice.
Massaging it onto the skin may help remove pimples, especially in areas with abundant hair. With prolonged use, it is traditionally used for removing calluses and acne. Wood tar soap is also considered useful.
When taken internally, it is traditionally used in syrup form along with other suitable medicines for chronic cough, winter cough, and asthma.
If taken in large quantities, it may impair digestion and cause stomach and head pain and vomiting. The urine may become black in color, and symptoms associated with carbolic acid poisoning may occur.
