Introduction
Alum is available in two varieties, formed by combining aluminum sulfate with potassium sulfate. Although they may differ in appearance, their functions and properties are considered similar. Alum occurs in various colors, but Zaj-e-Abyaz (White Alum) and Zaj-e-Ahmar (Red Alum) are the most well-known varieties.
Nature and Appearance
Alum occurs as colorless lumps resembling salt, although it is heavier than salt. It has a taste that is both sweet and astringent.
It dissolves in approximately ten parts of cold water or about three times its volume of boiling water.
Temperament
Hot and dry, third degree.
Actions
Alum has the following traditional medicinal actions:
- Emetic
- Expels the fetus and placenta
- Astringent
- Styptic (helps stop bleeding)
- Sedative
- Dries excessive moisture
- Counters intermittent fevers
Phitkari Biryan (Calcined Alum) additionally acts as a detergent, caustic, and expectorant.

Medicinal Uses
Mouth and Throat
Because of its styptic and moisture-drying properties, gargling with alum or applying it topically has traditionally been used for inflammation of the mouth and throat, tonsillitis, bleeding gums, mouth ulcers, loose gums, and loose teeth.
Vaginal Disorders
Washing with an alum solution has traditionally been used for vaginal laxity, leukorrhea (vaginal discharge), vaginal itching, and gonorrhea.
Rectal Disorders
Washing with alum water is traditionally considered beneficial for rectal prolapse and hemorrhoids.
Eye Disorders
Because calcined alum acts as a detergent and caustic, dissolving it in rose water and applying drops to the eyes has traditionally been used for trachoma and corneal ulcers.
Asthma and Cough
Its emetic action has traditionally made it useful for inducing vomiting, which was believed to provide relief from asthma and cough.
As an expectorant, calcined alum has also traditionally been used for whooping cough.
Intermittent Fevers
When the intestines are clear, alum is traditionally believed to help eliminate intermittent fevers.
Expulsion of Fetus and Placenta
Alum has traditionally been administered orally or used as a vaginal suppository to expel the fetus and placenta. However, excessive use may cause vomiting and diarrhea.
Elimination from the Body
Alum is generally eliminated from the body along with waste matter.
Specific Benefit
Kidney and bladder disorders.
