Introduction

Phoenix dactylifera, commonly known as the date palm, is an important fruit-bearing tree widely grown in Pakistan, India, and Middle Eastern countries. It is valued for its nutritive, tonic, and medicinal properties.

Botanical Description

Tree

  • The tree resembles a palm or coconut tree
  • It is tall, straight, and unbranched
  • Leaves and fruits grow at the top (crown) of the tree
  • Some small trees (about 4 feet) may grow but usually do not bear fruit

Leaves

  • Leaves are:
    • Long and large
    • Moderately wide
    • Thorny at the base
  • Many leaves arise from the top of the trunk

Fruit

  • Fruits are:
    • Oblong (elongated), almond-like in shape
    • Smooth and fleshy
  • Each fruit contains:
    • A single hard seed (kernel)
    • A deep groove on one side
  • Fruits grow in large hanging clusters
