Introduction (Clarification)
The term black seed is used for several substances, but the true Kaladana is associated with “Habb-ul-Nil” (Love of the Nile).
Other substances such as Harmal and some unrelated seeds are sometimes incorrectly referred to as black seed, but this is inaccurate.
Nature (Description)
Kaladana is a climbing vine that grows over surrounding trees and bushes, similar to a dodder or twining plant. Its branches are thin and green.
Leaves
The leaves are divided into three parts and measure about two to five inches in length. The middle segment is shaped like a spearhead. The leaves have rough hairs, similar to those found on okra plants.
Flowers
The flowers are reddish-blue and appear in the axils (middle) of the leaves, usually in clusters of one to five. From the front, they resemble a shehnai (trumpet-shaped), while the back side appears blue.
Seeds
The plant produces capsule-like pods containing two to three black, triangular seeds, known as black seeds.
There are two types:
- Large seeds – stronger effect, cause more diarrhea
- Small seeds – milder effect, cause less diarrhea
