Introduction
Bisfaij, also known as Khangali or polypody root, is a medicinal herb used in traditional Unani and herbal medicine. It is especially valued for its ability to expel phlegm, support respiratory health, and act as a gentle tonic for the heart and mind.
Botanical Characteristics
- Plant Structure: The plant has a somewhat spreading form with thick and prominent branches.
- Leaves: Leaves have jagged (toothed) edges, giving them a rough appearance.
- Roots:
- The root is the main medicinal part
- Knotty and segmented, with fine fibers at each node
- Resembles the structure of a date palm root
- Produces a thin green sap
- Hard and (strong) in texture
- Thickness similar to a pen
- Fresh root: Reddish-yellow outside, green inside (like pistachio), with a bitter, slightly astringent taste
- Old root: Turns more reddish; still used medicinally
