Cyprian Moneta

Introduction

Cypreae Moneta is the shell of a marine animal. It is described in two types. The first type is associated with pearl production and is known as Sadaf-e-Mardareedi or Sadaf-e-Sadiq; it is very rigid. The second type is much smaller, is commonly found in rivers and streams, and is known as Seepi.

Temperament

Cold and dry, second degree.

Actions

  • Styptic: Helps stop bleeding and hemorrhage, including spitting blood.
  • Desiccative: Has drying properties.
  • Detergent: Cleanses and removes impurities.
  • Anti-diarrheal: Traditionally used to help control diarrhea.
  • Cardiac tonic: Traditionally regarded as supportive for the heart.

Uses

Cypreae Moneta is traditionally used in two forms: as a finely ground and levigated powder known as Salaya and as Kushta, a calcined preparation. Salaya is traditionally considered more potent in its effects than the calcined form.

Because of its drying and cleansing properties, the powder is used in Manjan (tooth powder). It is traditionally used to help stop bleeding from the gums, cleanse and polish the teeth, and strengthen the gums.

Due to its styptic properties, it is traditionally used for various types of bleeding, including bleeding from the lungs, intestines, and uterus, such as excessive menstrual bleeding. It is also traditionally used for bleeding from other sites of the body.

Cypreae Moneta is regarded in traditional medicine as a cardiac tonic and is often taken with Murabba-e-Seeb (apple preserve) for heart-related support. A Kushta prepared with the Bhangra herb is also traditionally described as an effective remedy.

Its cleansing properties make it traditionally useful for skin blemishes, pigmentation, and spots. A coarsely ground powder is also traditionally applied to wounds caused by sharp instruments to help control bleeding.

Specific Benefit

Styptic—traditionally used to help stop bleeding.

Dosage

  • Salaya (levigated powder): (approximately 0.49–0.97 g)
  • Kushta (calcined preparation):  (approximately 0.12–0.24 g)
