Introduction

Thymus serpyllum, commonly known as Wild Thyme, is an aromatic herb used in Unani medicine for its antimicrobial, stimulant, and expectorant properties. It is also a source of “Sat-e-Thymus” (thyme extract).

Morphology (Plant Description)

Chemical Composition

  • Contains:
    • Volatile (essential) oil with strong fragrance
  • From this oil:
    • Sat-e-Thymus (thyme extract) is prepared
    • Further purification (e.g., with alcohol) produces refined forms

Note

  • In Europe, thyme extract is mainly obtained from Thymus vulgaris
  • In Asia/India, similar extracts may be derived from related plants and called Sat Podina / Sat Ajwain-type extracts
