Umbelliferae (Skanej)

Introduction

Skanej is the gum or resin obtained from a tree belonging to the Kandla family. It is red-yellow on the outside and white on the inside, with a white sap. It has a slightly bitter taste.

Like Butiz Hang and Ganda Biruzah, its potency is traditionally said to remain for about 20 years. It is brought from Isfahan, Persia, through Bombay.

Temperament

Hot and dry, third degree.

Actions

Externally: It is traditionally described as a laxative, astringent, stimulant, and expectorant.

Internally: It acts as a diuretic and astringent. It is traditionally believed to improve the absorption of medicines, kill and expel intestinal worms, and help relieve urinary obstruction. It is also considered diuretic and promotes menstruation.
